Why study bats?

Bats are one of the most misunderstood and maligned groups of mammals, yet they play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem health. In Goa, where natural landscapes are rapidly changing due to human land use and climate change, to name a few, bat populations face increasing threats. Despite their ecological importance as pollinators, seed dispersers, and insect controllers, there is a significant gap in knowledge regarding their diversity, distribution, and habitat requirements. Aside from this there is an increasing risk of human-wildlife conflict due to competition for food, space and habitat. Addressing this knowledge gap is essential for their conservation and for fostering a deeper appreciation of these remarkable animals. After all, bats account for 25% of India's mammalian biodiversity. That's a significant statistic and for us humans, well bats are extremely important for our own survival as well. Four species are shown below.

What do we do?

Our project focuses on studying the diversity and distribution of bat species in Goa. By conducting extensive field research, we aim to document the species present, understand their habitat preferences, and assess the environmental factors influencing their distribution. This research will contribute valuable insights to conservation planning and policy decisions.

How do we do it?

We employ a combination of scientific methods to gather data on bat populations:

Research aims:

Through our research, we aim to:

How can you help?

You can support our work in several ways:

Awareness initiatives:

Wild Otters Research and Great State Ale Works have joined forces to launch an innovative conservation initiative aimed at raising awareness for local wildlife species and their habitats in Goa, and the conservation challenges they might face. Through a combination of community engagement, education, and the brewing of a special limited-edition beer, this collaboration will highlight key environmental issues, promote local species conservation, and raise essential funds for ongoing conservation efforts.
The aims of this collaboration are many : By working collectively, we can ensure that bats continue to thrive in Goa’s ecosystems, benefiting both nature and people.
